The Protect Rio Vista program utilizes your subscription funds to hire off-duty Fort Lauderdale police officers to patrol in the neighborhood.  The officers are in uniform when on duty and have full authority to take official action action should a crime take place while on patrol.  The officers patrol in a marked car leased by the civic association and will be dispatched by FLPD for any 911 call recieved from the neighborhood.  Members also recieve a cell phone number by which they may contact the patrol officers directly while they are on duty.  Members also recieve the opportunity to request a vacation check of their home when they are out of town.

   On 3/27/20 in the early morning hours, ROC detectives were conducting surveillance in Rio Vista (73 zone) in reference to a rash of vehicle burglaries that occurred over the last two days.  ROC detectives observed two males walk eastbound into the neighborhood from US-1 at a time when most people are home due to the recent quarantine and State of Emergency.  The males were wearing long pants, hoodies and gloves even though the weather was warm.  The males began acting suspicious walking into driveways, walking up to vehicles and concealing themselves in the shadows.  ROC detectives maintained visual of the suspects while they continued to conduct themselves in a manor consist with burglary activity.
     At one point while conducting surveillance, one of the suspects attempted to burglarize a police vehicle with a detective inside of it. At that point detectives coordinated with the Papa Unit, K-9 and patrol.  The Papa unit then observed the suspects make entry into a vehicle in the 1700 block of SE 7th St. The suspect attempted to gain entry into several other vehicles. A perimeter was then established by patrol while K-9 and detectives made contact with the suspects who then attempted to flee and hide from police. After a short foot pursuit one was detained and the other was apprehended hiding in a backyard on a dock.
Both suspects were charged accordingly and transported to JAC.
