Protect the Isles and Cordova Rd Supplemental Membership

In addition to the plan to add License Plate Readers throughout Rio Vista, a group of concerned homeowners from the isles have begun funding a supplemental “Protect the Isles and Cordova Rd” police patrol, which is in addition to the patrol coverage currently funded by your Protect Rio Vista membership. This new supplemental program is designed to increase the patrol on the most crime-targeted streets. We are asking for every household benefiting from the increased security to participate by paying an additional annual fee of at least $1,500 to maintain a minimum of 24 hours per week, 4 nights per week overnight. Please note that this is a supplemental patrol payment program and will require that you also participate in the annual RVCA membership and Protect Rio Vista Program.

The Rio VIsta Civic Association is a voluntary civic association created to preserve the value and desirability of Rio Vista. We also strive to enrich the quality of life in Rio Vista through community projects and representation of its residents to other organizations. Membership is limited to residents of Rio Vista, owners and tenants. Renewing your membership will ensure your right to vote at general meetings on issues of importance to the neighborhood.

One of the key programs under RVCA is the Protect Rio Vista program which utilizes your subscription funds to hire off-duty Fort Lauderdale police officers to patrol in the neighborhood. The officers are in uniform when on duty and have full authority to take official action action should a crime take place while on patrol. The officers patrol in a marked car leased by the civic association and will be dispatched by FLPD for any 911 call received from the neighborhood. Members also receieve a cell phone number by which they may contact the patrol officers directly while they are on duty. Members also are given the opportunity to request a vacation check of their home when they are out of town.

We currently have 350 households out of the 1,000 homes in Rio Vista participating. This allows us to schedule the patrol for approximately 9 hours per day 365 days per year. Please follow this link for additional details.

Dues payments, contributions or gifts to RVCA are not tax deductible as charitable contributions for federal income tax purposes.

Inflation continues to erode our Security Patrol hours.

There are several factors driving our Protect Rio Vista Patrol costs. The first is keeping up with the increases per the FLPD contract with the city. The second is that the department is understaffed, and officers have no problem working as much overtime as they want so we have had to offer a premium to ensure that we can get enough officers to maintain our coverage. The final factor is that the city is changing the way details will be managed per the collective bargaining agreement. Beginning next year, the department will levy a $5 per hour fee to cover pension and health benefits for the officers. We will continue to have Sgt Wright as our detail coordinator to schedule the officers as needed in the neighborhood.

To cover the increases in costs while maintaining the same amount of coverage, the RVCA Board approved raising the PRV membership price from $475 to $550 effective November 1, 2024. At this level, your membership will fund just over 8 hours of patrol, a level we have tried to maintain.

The board trusts that you will continue to see the value the patrol brings to the neighborhood and help us maintain the level of coverage we have today. Our current PRV membership level supports 8 hours per day, 365 days per year. We need all current members to renew to maintain the current level of coverage. We encourage you to talk to your neighbors about supporting the patrol so we can add even more hours to the schedule.
