| E-NEWS UPDATE - July 31, 2008 |
|
Dear RVCA members, neighbors & friends,
PLEASE HELP US SUPPORT 'POLICE & FIREFIGHTERS APPRECIATION NIGHT!' Come out to Holiday Park on Tuesday, Aug. 5th, from 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm to help show our appreciation for our police and firefighters...it's also 'National Night Out Against Crime!' There will police & fire demonstrations, contests and prizes galore, so don't miss this chance to say 'Thank you!' to these valiant civil servants...all you have to do is to show up! RVCA will have a sponsor table manned by volunteers sporting our new RIO VISTA! tee shirts and serving freshly-popped hot popcorn to visitors...so be sure to stop by!
In addition, WE'VE BEEN CHALLENGED BY THE VICTORIA PARK CIVIC ASSOCIATION to a 'tug-of-war' contest during the Appreciation Night event...so we need all the bodies we can muster (hard bodies, soft bodies, any kind of body!) to take up the challenge and put these Victoria Park upstarts in their place! Show up & participate...and earn one of those sharp, new RIO VISTA! Tee Shirts for yourself! If you can compete...(or maybe would rather 'volunteer' your son or daughter for our team!!), contact RVCA Volunteer coordinator John Cavanaugh, or email editor@riovistaonline.com and we'll get your info to him!
Thanks!...see you Aug. 5th at Holiday Park in support of our police & firefighters...AND at our RVCA General Membership Meeting 'Candidates Night' on Sept. 15th.

| PLEASE NOTE! CHANGE IN RIO VISTA! Sept/Oct issue publication date! |
|
|
We're changing the publication date to late September for our next issue of RIO VISTA! so that we'll be able to include the presentations from our Sept. 15th 'Meet The Candidates Night' at our RVCA General Membership meeting. We realize everybody can't personally be there, so we want to be sure everyone in Rio Vista can hear...or at least read...what our local candidates for office have to say. Look for it in your mailbox in the last week of September!
Also...most of you have just received your new 2008-2009 RVCA membership card in the mail (the green one!). Please be sure to show it around to our advertisers and take advantage of any discounts or special offers from them!
In fact, show your card everywhere you go (locally, of course!) and ask if they belong to our RIO VISTA discount and special offers program! It will help us build the program with more offers and discounts...and helps the merchants track where their business is coming from! If you'd like to refer any local merchants or businesses for us to contact about participating, please call or email our publisher, George Mihaiu, and let him know... Tel: 954.828.1337 or publisher@riovistaonline.com. Thanks!

| LATEST RVCA SECURITY PATROL UPDATE & LOGS |
|
|
Through the 2nd half of July, there are now 304 households participating in our 'Protect Rio Vista' Security program. The yard signs have been distributed to everyone as of this time...and hope you feel as good as we do about seeing them as you walk or drive through the neighborhood! For information on joining, email riovistasecurity@earthlink.net.
Our patrol officers averaged 8.2 patrol hours per day for the 2nd half of July and have been actively monitoring the homes of those members who are out of town for anywhere from a few days to the whole summer. Click here for the latest redacted activity logs.
We're pleased to begin a new "Meet Our Officers" regular section in upcoming issues of RIO VISTA! where we'll interview and profile the officers working with us here in Rio Vista so we can all get to know them a bit better...and we'll have a special piece in our next issue on the 'Mounted Patrol' officers who spend time here in Rio Vista, as well. So stay tuned!

| RIO VISTA WORK TEAM VOLUNTEERS WIN BATTLE VS. DEBRIS!! |
|
|
Inspired by their sense of civic pride and sporting their sharp new RIO VISTA! Tee shirts to show their team colors, these brave souls took chainsaws, rakes and gloved hands...even a few bare hands...and fought against a blazing hot summer sun and stifling humidity to clean up the 7th Street/Federal Hwy. entrance to our neighborhood. Click here for the story and pictures!
Great job, everyone!!! If YOU would be interested in volunteering to help out on future RVCA Work Team projects (all kinds of help is needed and welcome!), email us at editor@riovistaonline.com. We'll pass it along to our RVCA project coordinator and he'll get back to you with more info on upcoming projects you can help with!

| "ORCHIDS!...& ONIONS!" |
| |
"ORCHIDS!" to our RIO VISTA WORK TEAM VOLUNTEERS for a fabulous clean-up effort at the 7th Street/Federal Hwy. entrance to Rio Vista. These folks fought a serious battle with debris and overgrowth on a hot, muggy Saturday morning that tested their commitment and even their stamina. It went 'above and beyond' the typical call of duty and they've won the admiration and appreciation of all of Rio Vista for their efforts!
"ORCHIDS" to our sponsors who made the clean-up possible:
Michael Helms at Workscapes, who provided electricity, parking and restrooms, and our friend Majid at 'KwikStop', who provided ice-cold bottled water and fountain drinks, and water to irrigate plantings. And Commissioner Cindi Hutchinson, who not only arranged for the city to pick up all the accumulated debris from the clean-up, but also showed up and pitched in on the clean-up effort with gloves, rake and broom! Thank you all!!
"ONIONS!" to the thoughtless individuals who are responsible for the litter and trash the rest of us end up suffering. These idiots apparently are unable, unwilling or incapable of grasping the concept of taking an extra second or two to put trash in trash cans instead of throwing it onto our streets and into our yards. Maybe our justice system should go back to some of the old ways of dealing with petty offenders and get them out there doing street clean up work.

| "WHERE IN RIO VISTA IS CALVIN??" JULY CONTEST WINNERS! |
|
|
Congratulations!...to Gregory Kimmelman (and one other person who we've yet to identify other than email address!) for correctly identifying where the shot of Calvin was taken here in Rio Vista! For those of you who didn't recognize it, the shot was taken across the street from Hector Park in front of 922 SE 11th St.
Each of our winners will receive a prize from our sponsor, Starbucks!
P.S. If you haven't seen Calvin around the 'hood lately, it's because his owner, Randy, broke his leg (femur) in a freak bicycle accident about 6 weeks ago while visiting his brother in California. We're pleased to report that Randy and Calvin are finally back home in Rio Vista and Randy's making excellent progress in rehabbing his injured leg! In fact, just yesterday Calvin took Randy out for his first walk around the neighborhood since the injury! We're all glad to have you both back!!
